New details uncovered after man, woman stabbed in necks in Sunrise

Police: Jackson Julian Sagesse, Jr., 21, claimed he was ‘murdering for self-defense’

SUNRISE, Fla. – While an initial arrest report obtained by Local 10 News in connection with a double stabbing at a Sunrise apartment complex was heavily redacted, a second copy of the arrest report obtained Monday reveals more details about what led up to the horrific crime.

According to the arrest report for Jackson Julian Sagesse, Jr., 21, who lives at The Retreat at Sawgrass Village, located at 3000 NW 130th Ave., surveillance video from the complex’s parking garage shows Sagesse approaching a black Mercedes-Benz sedan last Wednesday and stabbing a woman who was sitting in the rear passenger seat after the driver, Ian Bryant, went inside the building.

Sunrise police said the woman, Hailey Hosford, 28, of Boca Raton, initially opened the passenger side door, but then tried to quickly close it in an attempt to hide in the vehicle.

But police said Sagesse grabbed the door, forcing it open and then “a repeated stabbing motion” was visible on video.

According to the report, Sagesse then got into a “violent confrontation” with Bryant in the parking garage and stabbed the victim in the throat.

Bryant then fled the garage as Sagesse chased after him, authorities said.

Police said it was Bryant who called 911 at 1:42 a.m. Wednesday and said he had been stabbed in the neck.

A responding officer then spotted the victim in the front of the complex with a puncture wound to his throat.

Despite his injuries, he was still able to speak with officers and told them that someone had stabbed him in the apartment complex’s parking garage and then fled on foot.

Bryant described the suspect as a heavy-set Black male with an afro.

According to the arrest report, Bryant told police that his female friend, Hosford, also had been stabbed and was still inside his rented vehicle in the parking garage.

Police said they approached the car on the first floor of the parking garage and found the woman unresponsive on the floorboard of the backseat.

She had multiple visible stab wounds to her neck and throat, authorities said.

A knife that appeared to be part of a set of steak knives was also found on the front passenger seat of the vehicle, the report stated.

According to the report, Hosford was pronounced dead at the scene.

“She was very into her work and business and traveling,” said Erica Rheingold, a friend of the victim. “Yoga retreats, all that stuff.”

Police said Sagesse was taken into custody a few minutes later at his apartment where he lives with his mother and a steak knife was found in his front right pocket.

According to the report, Sagesse provided a confession to detectives, although he claimed he was “murdering for self-defense.”

Police said Sagesse claimed that he was inside the parking garage to cross over to another building where he uses the gym and saw the victims’ car with its lights on and thought he should call police.

But he claimed that he didn’t have his phone on him so he went back to his apartment to get his phone and a knife for “personal protection,” the arrest report stated.

According to the report, Sagesse admitted to stabbing Hosford multiple times, aiming for “vital parts,” and estimated that he stabbed her about 10 times.

Police said a medical examiner inspected her body and found at least five stab wounds to the neck and throat area.

Police said Sagesse also admitted to stabbing Bryant, but said he didn’t know how severely he was injured because he ran away.

According to the report, while Sagesse claimed self-defense multiple times, he could not detail any possible threats from the victims.

He faces charges of first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder.

A motive for the double stabbing remains unclear.

According to a GoFundMe page for Bryant, he was in the ICU where he underwent a tracheostomy and still needs more medical care.

A GoFundMe for Hosford says loved ones are working to raise money for a beachside memorial, as well as a foundation named in her honor. The goal is to provide support for those “pursuing their dreams in the world of hair, beauty and self-expression, a world Hosford illuminated with her passion, artistry and radiant soul from the young age of 16.”
