POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin released a statement Tuesday saying the city is in the process of evaluating law enforcement services.

The Pompano Beach commission asked the city manager to hire a consultant to look into the Broward County Sheriff’s Office services “compared to other similar municipalities, highlighting performance metrics.”

The commissioners also want to consider costs and recommended service levels to consider the alternative of creating “a new city of Pompano Beach Police Department.”

The mayor’s statement followed a report from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel citing how law enforcement costs have increased over the past three years from $53 million to $63 million.
