Trump increases steel, aluminum tariffs to 50%; Musk criticizes ‘big, beautiful’ bill

WASHINGTON – U.S. President Donald Trump increased tariffs on foreign-made steel and aluminum from 25% to 50% starting after midnight Wednesday with an exception for the United Kingdom.

The increase will “further secure the steel industry in the U.S.,” Trump said during his visit Wednesday at U.S. Steel’s Mon Valley Works–Irvin Plant in Pittsburgh.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk used X to criticize Trump’s “big, beautiful” bill after it cleared the House late last month and had yet to clear the Senate.

“This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” Musk wrote.

Trump had asked senators “to work as fast as they can to get this Bill to MY DESK before the Fourth of JULY.”

The bill aims for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and includes cuts to Medicaid and food stamps, stop taxes on tips, and allocate $350 billion for immigration law enforcement.
