Jail records show Kurt Cranston, 32, is facing two counts of attempted murder after investigators say he opened fire on a group of juveniles near an apartment complex in the 2000 block of Northwest 43rd Terrace around 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Both victims, identified by family members as 17-year-old Marvin Travis and 16-year-old Shiraji Reid, were taken to Broward Health Medical Center and are expected to survive.
According to Lauderhill police, officers responded to the complex after a ShotSpotter alert registered 12 gunshots. They said one of the victims was found in the roadway, the other in a nearby parking lot.
Authorities said surveillance video reportedly showed Cranston walking near the complex’s leasing office with a gun tucked under his armpit before raising it and aiming toward a group of males in a courtyard. Police said he walked toward them and began firing as the group ran.
Police said Cranston claimed the shooting was tied to an earlier incident on June 1 and said he had feared for his life. Detectives said that claim remains under review.
Family members told Local 10 News that Reid required CPR at the scene and is recovering after a bullet struck his femoral artery.
“We need a change, the streets are too bad,” Reid’s grandmother, Barbara Brown, told Local 10 News on Thursday. “These children need to go to church.”
As of Saturday, Cranston is being held without bond at the Broward Main Jail.
