The crash occurred just after 3 p.m. at the intersection of Northwest 54th Street and Northwest Fifth Avenue, near Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, according to Miami police.

Investigators said Shanetta Chantell Gilbert was driving a 2008 Nissan Altima eastbound in the left lane of Northwest 54th Street when the victim, who was riding a scooter westbound on the right shoulder, suddenly made a sharp left turn to cross the road from north to south.

They said the man “violated” Gilbert’s right of way, leading to a collision.

The front of Gilbert’s car struck the man, who came to rest in the westbound lanes of Northwest 54th Street, according to police.

Miami Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene and transported the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he was initially listed in critical condition after suffering an evisceration to the abdomen, a broken left leg, a broken ankle, and a traumatic brain injury, according to police.

Authorities confirmed Tuesday that the victim died from his injuries. His age and identity have not been released as of Tuesday afternoon.

They said Gilbert remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, despite initial reports of a hit-and-run crash.

A records check revealed that Gilbert had never been issued a valid driver’s license, according to investigators.

Jail records show she is facing one count of not possessing a valid driver’s license following a crash.

As of Tuesday, Gilbert was not listed as an inmate on the Miami-Dade Corrections’ website.
