MIAMI – Jon Ferrell, whose 17-year-old son, Dominic, was stabbed to death last weekend at the Icon high-rise building in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood, released a statement ahead of Father’s Day, reminding parents to “appreciate every precious moment” they have with their children.
“On behalf of my family, we want to thank all of you for your outpouring of love and support. We have experienced a tragedy and loss of immeasurable magnitude as our family now honors the life of our son,” Ferrell said.

Ferrell and his wife are reportedly separated, and Dominic was spending the night at his father’s apartment last weekend when he was stabbed to death by a stranger while sleeping in his own bedroom.
“All families have differences,” Ferrell said. “Consistent with Dominic’s extraordinary empathy and our loving bond, he chose to join me on the night of this horrific event. Of course, my wife and I will cooperate with law enforcement as we get to the bottom of this senseless murder. In this most difficult time, I reflect back on the evening before his death. Dominic and I were talking about our plans for Father’s Day, which included a golf game and quality time with all of the family.”
According to Miami police, a man identified as Kyrill R. Kehl, 26, followed two men into an elevator inside the building early Sunday morning as the men used their key card to get to the 47th floor.
Police said the suspect possibly made his way to a stairwell to get down to the 34th floor.
According to police, Kehl checked various door handles before arriving to the victim’s unit, which was unlocked.
Police said he then stabbed Dominic to death as the teen was sleeping in his bedroom.
Surveillance video shows Kehl fleeing the scene after the stabbing, authorities said.
Officers said he then entered an adjacent building that was under construction before falling to his death.
“It is unimaginable to us that such a violent and deranged man was able to enter the lobby, elevator, and ultimately, the residential floors of the Icon Residences,” Ferrell said. “I chose to stay at this well-known building because of my expectation of safety and security. I look forward to the Miami Police Department’s findings for the closure our family so desperately needs.
“Right now is the time for my family to heal and mend as we make funeral arrangements. We are shattered by the loss of Dominic, but we will be strong and will come together with God’s help.
“On this Fathers’ Day, I pray that you hug your children and appreciate every precious moment you have with them.”
