California ‘pimp’ tried to kill victim at Miami Beach hotel: Police

Miami Beach police officers accused Cobie Lavender of human trafficking and trying to kill a victim from a balcony at a hotel along Collins Avenue, records show.

In one week, Miami-Dade prosecutors filed six felony charges as part of three new cases against a 26-year-old California man who detectives identified as a “pimp.”

Prosecutors filed the first of three cases against Cobie Lavender on June 9, after Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office deputies accused him of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, records show.

A victim reported that she was with Lavender on June 10 at Eden Rock Miami Beach, a 4-star beachfront hotel along Collins Avenue, when he held her over a 20th-floor balcony rail, records show.

“B[expletive], I could kill you. Go ahead B[expletive], jump,” Lavender told the woman, according to an arrest report.

After his arrest, corrections booked Lavender shortly after 8:40 a.m., on June 11, at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

That same day, prosecutors filed the Miami Beach Police Department case for human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation, deriving support from the proceeds of prostitution, aggravated assault with a firearm, and witness tampering.

On June 14, prosecutors filed another MBPD case for first-degree attempted murder. Court records show Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Cristina Miranda was presiding over the three cases.

Correctional deputies were holding Lavender at the Metrowest Detention Center without bond on Monday afternoon.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
