Florida man confesses to sexually abusing child for years: Deputies

BUNNELL, Fla. – A 45-year-old Florida man confessed to sexually abusing a child several times a week for about three years, deputies announced on Monday.

According to Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies, the child’s mother reported the sexual abuse to authorities on June 19.

In a statement released on Monday, Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly described the case as “heartbreaking” and Gregory Smith as a “pervert” and a “dirtbag.”

Deputies with the fugitive unit reported arresting Smith, of Palm Coast, on June 27, at his workplace in the town of Bunnell.

“It took a lot of bravery for this young victim to come forward,” Staly said also adding that Smith should spend the rest of his life in prison.

Smith -- who has a criminal history that includes burglary, drug possession, and fraud caseSmith was at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility without bond, county records show Monday afternoon.

Smith faced seven charges: Five counts of sexual battery of a minor and two counts of lewd and lascivious molestation of a minor.
