AVENTURA, Fla. – An Aventura police officer opened fire during an incident at a shopping center Thursday.
First responders were sent to the Aventura Cove Plaza, located in the 19000 block of Biscayne Boulevard, just before 1:45 p.m., dispatch records show.
Video from Sky 10 showed multiple Aventura police officers going in and out of RH Beauty + Salon, located within the strip mall. Police said an officer opened fire at the salon after a “disturbance.”
The officer wasn’t injured, but the person he or she shot was taken to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital. That person was said to be in critical condition Thursday afternoon but later died at the hospital, authorities said.
Several witnesses told Local 10 News that a man, who appeared to possibly be under the influence, showed up and got into an argument with the salon owner.
“The suspect’s wife supposedly no longer works at the salon,” a witness, who didn’t want to be identified, said. “He threatened the owner and he was taken away and came back later on.”
Police have not confirmed any details about what led up to the shooting.
Police said that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been called to the scene to investigate, as is standard procedure.
