FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Authorities have released body camera footage stemming from a police shooting that occurred earlier this year in Broward County.
It happened in the middle of the afternoon on Jan. 19 at a Chevron gas station located along the 3100 block of Davie Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.
The video was released by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.
It shows the moment a sergeant tries to catch a suspect, identified as Chad Mabray Jr., who police said took off from a traffic stop.
In the video, Mabray allegedly reaches for something in his waistband, and that’s when the sergeant opened fire.
Surveillance video also captured the shooting.
Mabray, who family members said was highly intelligent but suffered from mental illness, died at a nearby hospital, all after an initial traffic stop a mile and a half away where detectives say Mabray initially failed to pull over.
Police said the item he was reaching for turned out to be an air-powered replica, but without any marking to indicate it was not a real gun.
