MIAMI SPRINGS, Fla. — A 42-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he broke into a Miami Springs hotel room early Thursday morning, assaulted his girlfriend of two weeks, and dragged her away against her will.

The suspect, who Miami Springs police identified as Agustin Rodriguez, was arrested just after the violent incident unfolded at the Red Roof Plus Miami Airport, located at 3401 NW 42nd Ave., shortly before 6 a.m.

A man told police that Rodriguez, who is listed as homeless in his arrest report, kicked in the door to a hotel room on the second floor, and saw him with his girlfriend before he started attacking her, authorities said.

The report stated that Rodriguez struck the woman multiple times, grabbed her by the hair, slammed her to the floor, and then forcibly dragged her out of the room.

Authorities said the man who she was with told officers he was in shock and unable to intervene at the time she was being attacked. He said Rodriguez never addressed him and focused all his aggression on the woman, the report stated.

After forcing the victim out of the room, police said Rodriguez ordered her to leave the property with him.

When she tried to use her phone to call for help, they said he reportedly took it from her and refused to return it.

The victim later told officers that she tried to escape but was physically overpowered as Rodriguez held onto her arm and waist while yelling at her, according to investigators.

They said she eventually began calling out for help, which drew the attention of people nearby.

Miami Springs police said officers quickly located Rodriguez and the victim in the surrounding area and confirmed that he was detained without incident.

They said the woman appeared visibly distressed and told police that she feared for her life during the attack.

Investigators said she had visible injuries, including a swollen face, a bleeding contusion on her head, and clothing consistent with being dragged.

They said medics with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene and treated her for her injuries.

Investigators said they found the hotel room in disarray, with furniture moved and the door badly damaged — consistent with signs of a forced entry and struggle. Damage to the door was estimated at $1,200, according to the report.

Rodriguez initially spoke with investigators, claiming the woman had called him to say she was at the hotel, though he said she never told him the room number, the report stated.

Investigators said he claimed to have heard her voice while walking through the hallway. However, they said he denied assaulting her, and after further questioning, invoked his right to remain silent.

Jail records show Rodriguez is facing one count of kidnapping with a weapon or firearm, burglary with assault or battery, aggravated battery and strongarm robbery.

As of Friday, he is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
