CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Dozens of people gathered Sunday morning to pick up trash in a popular Miami-Dade County park, leaving it cleaner than they found it.

The event took place at Matheson Hammock Park in Coral Gables.

Approximately 50 people showed up to do community service work, helping to keep the coastal beach area free of trash and preserve the park.

Many of the volunteers were part of the World Mission Society Church of God, but several others also joined to help with the effort.

“The trash that we are finding is plastic (and) glass,” said Gabriel Perez, a volunteer coordinator with the church. “We are finding stereophonic cups and all that can be a huge hazard, especially here being in the marina and the ocean to the wildlife, so what we are doing is making sure that the ecosystem is preserved.”

The next clean-up will take place in October and will also be in the Coral Gables area.
