Pair embroiled in drug feud both jailed after 1 tries to set home on fire, other opens fire: MDSO

Gyasi Weir and Quanella McCutchen

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Both sides of a week-long feud over a drug payment were arrested Friday after a case of arson and a drive-by shooting in northwest Miami-Dade, according to arrest reports obtained by Local 10 News on Monday.

Deputies said Gyasi Weir, 33, of Miami, lit the door of a home on fire in the 1300 block of Northwest 77th Street at around 7:30 a.m. as 11 people were sleeping inside. The fire did not spread further.

They said Quanella McCutchen, 36, resided at the home and he opened fire on Weir a few blocks away as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded to the arson.

The reports don’t state whether McCutchen was aware of the fire at his home when he allegedly shot at Weir in the 7400 block of Northwest 13th Avenue in the unincorporated Gladeview area.

Authorities said McCutchen pulled up to the arson scene in his Toyota Yaris and Weir followed behind and said McCutchen shot at him.

Weir’s arrest report outlines the alleged drug feud that sparked it all.

“The defendant (Weir) stated he previously purchased some narcotics from Mr. McCutchen, and he asked if he could get credit for the narcotics,” it states. “The defendant stated his dad advised him Mr. McCutchen was looking for him (regarding) payment and his father told him he gave him ($25). The defendant stated he was trying to avoid Mr. McCutchen.”

While Weir avoided being shot and McCutchen avoided having his house burn down, neither man avoided going to jail.

Weir was arrested on one count of arson and 11 counts of attempted murder, while McCutchen was arrested on charges of attempted murder, shooting or throwing a deadly missile, discharging a firearm from a vehicle and armed criminal mischief.

Both were being held without bond in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Monday morning.
