Miami Beach approves pilot program to allow alcohol on beach

Miami Beach officials approve pilot program allowing alcohol on beach

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Rules are changing on Miami Beach as city officials have now deciding that you will be able to relax on the beach with an alcoholic beverage.

“We are just trying to emulate where the great beaches are in the world, that’s part of our vision,” said Miami Beach Commissioner Kristin Rosen Gonzalez.

Earlier this week, Miami Beach commissioners, on a 5 to 2 vote, approved a one-year pilot program to allow booze on the beach.

“This is the beach, this is Miami, people come here to have a good time,” said Osiris Ramirez. “To just provide us with that, make it a little easier for us, that’s the way to go.”

Added Steve Turk: “I think it will actually help because you see a lot of people with coolers, selling drinks randomly, you never know what’s inside of those. It’s not regulated. And then you have people underage bringing their own coolers here, couldn’t control that and they would get a little rowdy.”

For those of age, the new program gives Boucher Brothers, and only the Boucher Brothers located right in front of Lummus Park, the he green light to sell beer, wine, and mixed drinks.

“It saves me a 10 minute walk or five minute walk over to the nearest beach bar, instead I can just get it while I’m sitting down,” said Henry Kogan.

Why the city’s change of heart? It will get a cut, of course.

“The city is going to get a minimum of $250,000 of revenue per year, but we will get a revenue share of roughly 20% of all alcohol sales sold, and we can use it for education, or cultural institutions, or non for profit,” said Rosen Gonzalez.

Cocktails will soon be mixed from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.

City officials are working out the details to decide when to start the sale of cocktails.
