POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Pompano Beach hosted a ceremony Tuesday in honor of a 51-year-old slain deputy whose murder remained unsolved nearly 18 years later.
Broward Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Chris Reyka was killed while on duty on Aug. 10, 2007, in the parking lot of the Walgreens at 960 South Powerline Road.
According to BSO, Reyka, a veteran with an 18-year career in law enforcement, was checking on two cars when he was fatally shot at about 1:20 a.m.
“Sergeant Reyka was more than a respected officer,” Mayor Rex Hardin said in a statement. “He was a husband, a father, a mentor, and a true public servant.”
Reyka was born on April 28, 1956, in Fairborn, Greene County, Ohio, and after moving to Broward County graduated from Piper High School in Sunrise.
The retired U.S. Marine served with the Pompano Beach Police Department before joining BSO in August 1999.
Reyka, a father of four, had been promoted to sergeant in 2004 and was a 2006 supervisor leadership academy graduate.
Broward County Crime Stoppers has promoted a $267,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and prosecution in the unsolved case.
