Man accused of causing violent crash that left 4 injured in Miami following chase faces judge

According to deputies, a unit with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Robbery Intervention Detail tried stopping a driver in the area of Northwest 56th Street and 27th Avenue for dark tints, but he sped away.

Shortly after, a crash involving three vehicles, including the one that fled from the RID unit, occurred, deputies said.

Home surveillance video obtained by Local 10 News Thursday shows the moments that the driver of a white Mercedes barreled into two vehicles at the busy intersection.

According to first responders, two of the vehicles were badly damaged and one SUV rolled over, which left several people trapped inside.

Authorities said crews with Miami Fire Rescue had to extricate four people from one vehicle who were then rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

Additional video from passing drivers showed good Samaritans trying to turn the SUV upright.

Detectives said they determined that the driver who took off caused the crash.

They later identified him as Jahnye Davis, 20, of Coral Springs.

Jail records show he is facing charges including leaving the scene of a crash causing serious bodily injury, fleeing and eluding and resisting arrest.

Local 10 News spoke with witness Denisse Molina, who said that many people went to go help the individuals involved in the crash.

“The people from the neighborhood came out to help and see what was going on and at that moment, police and rescue arrived,” she said. “I was trying to figure out what was happening and if the people were OK.”

Davis appeared in bond court Thursday, where a judge noted that Wednesday’s arrest was not his first encounter with the law, citing at least one prior DUI case in South Florida.

While Davis’ mother was present for his bond hearing, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer decided not to go easy on him.

“Driving is a privilege and not a right. You could’ve killed somebody,” Glazer said. “I know what his next stop is. You are going to jail or prison if you are found guilty.”

All the victims remain in critical condition as of Thursday evening.

Records show Davis is being held on an $8,000 bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
