KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. — Divers hit the waters off South Florida early Wednesday morning for lobster mini season.
The event officially kicked off at midnight and lasts only two days.
For some folks, it’s the highlight of the year as they were counting the days until they could get out on the water and catch some lobster.
“We come out with friends and family. It’s kinda been a tradition for me,” Johan Eise said.
Safety is always a priority with plenty of U.S. Coast Guard crews standing by, making sure safe boating practices are at the forefront.
“We did dive in first and then we did some bully netting,” one diver, Nick Kane, said early Wednesday morning. “Just tough tonight. The current was a little strong when we started, but then we went over bully netting and got a few. All in all, (it was) a good night. We’ll be back here about 5:30/6:00 doing some diving over at the bridge.”
“It’s a lot of fun and it’s a great time,” another diver, John Ondrejack said.
Ondrejack’s son, Johnathan Ondrejack, captioned the boat they used to catch some lobsters for dinner.
“He took me before I could even basically walk,” Johnathan Ondrejack said.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, lobsters must be larger than 3 inches and be measured in the water.
The daily bag limit is six per person in Monroe County and Biscayne National Park, and 12 per person for the rest of Florida.
