Girls, 7 and 13, drowned after Biscayne Bay boat crash, medical examiner says

MIAMI — The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner determined that the two girls killed in Monday’s Biscayne Bay boat crash died by accidental drowning, an office spokesperson told Local 10 News Thursday morning.

The victims have been identified as Mila Yankelevich, 7, and Erin Ko Han, 13, natives of Argentina and Chile, respectively. Two other girls, aged 8 and 10, were left in critical condition, while one other girl and a 19-year-old camp counselor weren’t badly hurt.

The wreck happened at around 11 a.m. Monday off Miami Beach’s Hibiscus Island when a barge crashed into the Miami Yacht Club youth sailing camp boat.

Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard, which is investigating the crash, said Tuesday that they believed all five children aboard the sailboat were wearing life jackets.

Several questions regarding the wreck remained unanswered as of Thursday, including which vessel had the right of way.
