According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened just before noon on Sunday on a section of beach near the 700 block of North Ocean Boulevard.

Investigators said Misty Dawn Smith, 36, of Junction City, Kentucky, was seen on video “poking and scraping” at the protected nest using a plastic knife.

“The video provided depicted (Smith) standing at the very edge of the nest, with footprints under the pink line in the edge of the nest, using a plastic knife and scraping the surface of the nest and poking under the sand with the knife,” the report states. “The video also clearly shows (her) intentionally reaching over the pink line into the nest.”

Deputies said Smith confessed. After taking her into custody, they said they discovered the felony warrant out of Danville, Kentucky.

As of Monday, Smith was being held in BSO’s North Broward Bureau jail facility on a felony charge of destroying, selling or molesting turtle eggs or nests, along with the aforementioned warrant out of the Bluegrass State.
