BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Students in Broward County head back to class one week from today, and what’s for lunch is one of the main things on students’ minds.
“We prepare healthy, balanced meals so that our students have that every school day,” Broward County Public Schools dietician Elizabeth Seeley said.
A new school year is bringing in new breakfast and lunch items at Broward schools.
“These standards ensure that we’re following proper portions, having fresh fruits, colorful fresh fruits and vegetables available to our students, and limits on sodium, calories and added sugar,” Seeley said.
The district unveiled some of the brand-new meals students can expect to see on the menu when they head back to class and the cafeteria next week.
“We don’t just serve meals, we listen to our students. And through school-based focus groups, our students told us what they wanted,” Seeley said.
Among those options are a new Philly cheesesteak sub on fresh-baked bread and a “Broward bowl,” featuring chicken, mashed potatoes and some really cheesy mac and cheese.
One of the most popular items among student test groups were new pastelito and bono bites, which is a Brazilian bread stuffed with cheese. The bread is baked fresh in Hialeah and is very cheesy.
Students this year also requested more past items, like cheese tortellini. And who doesn’t love a good hot dog, especially one wrapped in a pretzel.
“We want to provide healthy meals to our students, but also delicious meals to our students, so we’re utilizing different flavors to do that,” Seeley said.
