FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Fort Lauderdale firefighters rescued a German shepherd from a canal early Tuesday morning after receiving a 911 call about a loose dog struggling to get out of the water.
Crews with Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said they responded around 7:45 a.m. to the 400 block of Northwest 23rd Street, where a caller reported the dog had been roaming the neighborhood before ending up in the canal.
Video obtained by Local 10 News show the moments that a firefighter was able to safely pull the dog from the water and brought her back to FLFR’s Firehouse 47, where they said she was given food, clean water and a place to rest.
“It’s just the right thing to do. We had to get this dog out of the water,” said a first responder at the scene. “I took my shoes off to go grab her.”
Firehouse 47 is located at 1000 SW 27th Ave.
“She’s super sweet,” said FLFR spokesman Frank Guzman. “Because of her demeanor, we’re confident she is or was someone’s pet, but she had no collar or identification.”
UPDATE: An FLPD Animal Crimes Sergeant tracked down the owner.
Authorities said she lives in St. Cloud and says she’s on her way down to Fort Lauderdale to pick up the dog.
They said back in 2018, her son adopted the dog from Broward County Animal Care. Some months later, he gave her away to a friend before moving.
Guzman said the dog is currently in the care of firefighters while they await for the owner.
