MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — With back-to-school approaching, Miami-Dade County Public Schools is prepared to use technology to deal with students’ growing vaping problem.

Al Torossian, the principal of Miami Beach High School, has confiscated many as teenagers are getting hooked despite all of the health warnings.

“There is even some that look like highlighters,” Torossian said.

The school was part of the first group that received sensors that look like smoke detectors. Every restroom has a sensor that produces an alert when someone is vaping.

“It will tell us exactly what bathroom number, what time,” Torossian said.

The alert also triggers a surveillance camera set up outside the restrooms, so it can record who is walking out. The sensors also alert when there are loud noises.

As for Broward County Public Schools, a spokesperson told Local 10 that the district has evaluated some vape detection solutions, but nothing is in the works for now.
