MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Surveillance video released by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Thursday captured the moments that deputies say a driver struck and killed a 69-year-old man in a hit-and-run crash in northwest Miami-Dade.
Stephany Sarmiento De Moya wiped away tears Wednesday as she spoke about the sudden and violent death of her grandfather, Enrique De Moya, who was hit while crossing Northwest 131st Street at Northwest Seventh Avenue around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
“It is so hard to think about how he was taken from us so suddenly, violently ... and the person didn’t even have the courage to stop,” she said. “I don’t know how you could do that to somebody and go on about your day.”
Detectives said De Moya was struck by a silver Toyota Tundra — a 2014 to 2017 model — and the driver did not stop.
Steven De Moya told Local 10 Thursday that he’s having a hard time processing what happened to his father.
“There’s just a lot going through my mind - what my father was going through, what were his last few seconds,” he said. “It’s just very sad, I don’t know how you could live with that in your conscience knowing you took somebody’s life.”
The family is pleading for justice and asking anyone with information to come forward. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and prosecution in the case.
Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477. Callers can remain anonymous.
