DAVIE, Fla. — The Western High Wildcats of Davie, with the help of a former NFL player, were out early Saturday morning, excited to help fellow students gear up for the new school year.
Nearly 500 backpacks — each pre-filled with school supplies, snacks, and other essentials — were available for students to choose from.
Children of all ages showed up for the event, open to students from the Western High School zone, including Flamingo, Fox Trail and Silver Ridge elementary schools, and Indian Ridge Middle School.
The giveaway held special meaning for Jon Feliciano, a Western High alum and recently retired NFL offensive lineman. After a 10-year career in the league, Feliciano said he felt called to give back.
“It’s very special. This place gave me a lot growing up. For four years I spent 12 hours of the day at this place and it kept me out of trouble, they fed me (and) taught me how to be a man,” said Feliciano.
“As a parent I know it’s tough to get your kids the things they need and if I can help bridge the gap a little bit I would be honored to do so,” he added.
Hundreds of backpacks are available for students in the Western High zone. The giveaway continues until around noon.
