DORAL, Fla. — As students return to class Monday, areas of Doral will have brand new speed cameras in school zones, aimed to catch speeding drivers who can put students’ lives at risk.
Drivers who are caught going over 10 miles an hour above the speed limit will receive a $100 fine.
They’ll have 30 days to either pay the fine or request a hearing.
The cameras are only on 30 minutes before school starts, throughout the school day, and 30 minutes after school lets out, and not on weekends or holidays.
The school district says the cameras will be clearly marked so drivers will have the opportunity to slow down.
Doral Police Chief Edwin Lopez said this will help keep students safe and give their parents some peace of mind.
“We’ve had kids hit by motorists driving next to us, we’ve had students killed years ago in our school grounds here in Miami-Dade County as well,” said Lopez. “So, this helps educate the community that we take an active stand towards this.”
The cameras will be outside more than a dozen schools across the Doral area, from elementary to high schools.
Even though school starts Monday, drivers will have some time to get used to the cameras.
There is a 30-day grace period, so fines won’t be handed out until after Sept. 14.
