“We have a problem that every arts organization wants to have: how do you get younger audiences to attend and opera, or a symphony?” said festival founder Michael Rossi. “We have that problem kind of solved.”

The answer was immersive theater, creating environments that transport audiences into new worlds, from space to under the sea.

“We’re able to put people on the moon, fly through outer space, it kind of creates this Disney like ride with visuals and music,” said Rossi.

This new endeavor, which is called the Immersive Space Symphony, is Rossi’s brainchild.

He has transformed the grand ballroom of Temple Emanu-El into a world of imagination, merging classical music with technology.

“There’s a couple of ways we do it, I don’t want to tell every single way we do it,” he said.

Eight massive projectors and an LED wall help to create the illusion, known as projection mapping, from the walls to ceiling, and even the floor.

It’s currently operating about a hundred scenes.

The projectors are powerful enough to be used on buildings outside as well.

Since creating the immersive shows, Rossi has noticed an increase in first-time tickets holders.

“The technology is what brought them in,” he said. “They felt it was something that would be fun, different and cool. Also part of the style that is this new immersive technology and art is at the same time, listening to Beethoven.”

Performance of the Immersive Space Symphony run through the end of the month. For more information on the music festival, click here.
