Hundreds of thousands of students are returning to class, many of them who take the bus.

Local 10 News reporter Trent Kelly was at Broward’s North Bus Depot in Pompano Beach early in the morning as drivers headed out on their routes.

Shortly after 7 a.m., nearly 200 school buses had already left to pick up students.

Prior to heading out, drivers were seen inspecting the buses to make sure they were running smoothly.

While students may be heading back to school Monday, the bus drivers have already been hard at work for several days.

In fact, the district says they have more than 750 different bus routes, making sure the entire county is covered.

Local 10 was there as some of those drivers completed their dry runs and safety checks last week, making sure everyone knows exactly where they were going Monday.

Safety checks, which were done Monday as well, are also very important as the drivers have to make sure those stop arms and flashing lights are working so they can keep kids safe as they board and exit the bus.

The district, of course, is making safety a top priority. They say the drivers are trained for all sorts of scenarios that may arise -- everything from medical emergencies to mechanical issues.

Last week, Local 10 spoke to a district official about some of that training that these drivers undergo before the first day of school.

“We have question and answer sessions, we do little skits and simulations. We wanna make sure they’re prepared for what could happen. And then we give them, if you can’t handle it, what are the steps you have to take? Contact dispatch, contact 911, push the panic button if need be,” Simone Clowers, the executive director of student transportation and fleet services for the district, said

So far Monday, no issues have been reported as students return to school.
