MIRAMAR, Fla. — Students, parents and teachers have been locked out of their Miramar private school following a contract dispute with the city. Now they’re demanding answers.
Tuesday marked day two of the school year, but Light Academy of Florida students are spending their morning inside the lobby of the city hall.
They, along with their parents and the school’s principal, Cassandre Davis, demanded answers about why their school has been blocked off.
“I am beyond saddened, I am emboldened to move forward because obviously this is something that is going to be so great and there’s powers against it for no reason,” Davis, who founded the school, said.
The school is located in Vizcaya Park, inside a building operated by the city of Miramar. Davis says she had a contract with the city to be there.
But last Thursday, she said her plan took a sharp turn when she received an email from Miramar Assistant City Manager Stephen Johnson stating the administration’s decision to terminate the contract. The message said “any funds you may have submitted which have cleared the bank will be refunded in full.”
Davis is now on a mission to find out why.
“I want the city of Miramar to give us access to our classrooms, wait for us to litigate this in court so that the courts can see this is absolutely a breach of contract,” she said.
Students and families say they’ve been left without answers.
“This morning, I was excited to go to school and learn and then I was brought here, so I’m worried we did something wrong,” student Aliana Lyons said.
Student Jedediah Louis said, “This is my second day of sixth grade. I want to develop and learn, so I don’t know why they’re doing this to us.”
“I’ve cried enough. There are no more tears. We are moving forward,” Davis said.
Local 10 News contacted officials with the city of Miramar seeking comment on Tuesday. We were told the city manager and assistant city manager were in a meeting Tuesday morning.
