FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Broward students marked National Beach Day with a community-wide cleanup Saturday morning at Fort Lauderdale Beach.
Volunteers picked up straws, bottles, and other trash items scattered along the shoreline.
The event was organized by the Broward Student Authority, which partnered with Beach Place to host the effort.
Organizer Ian Katz said the timing was important after months of heavy beach use.
“We planned this because this beach is our jewel here in Broward County,” Katz said. “We love our beach and we have a lot, a lot of things to clean up after we had the tort. We have the Florida Panthers. We had Tortuga (Music Festival) spring break, so the beach has gotten a lot of traffic. We partnered up with the beach place and we’re coming out here and we’re taking care of our beach.”
Katz emphasized the impact of a clean shoreline on both wildlife and the local economy.
“For the people that come out here and enjoy it, I mean that all has to do with our, you know, our local economy,” he said. “I mean people come here and you know, they come here because of the beach and you know, if you have a clean beach, people will enjoy themselves.”
The group said Saturday’s effort was the first of what they hope will be monthly cleanups leading up to and following spring break.
“We’re looking to do this on a monthly basis. This is the venue that we host spring break, the spring break HQ,” Katz said. “And all the way until spring break we’re looking to do beach cleanups, of course during the month of March to spring break and then after that again we’re definitely gonna have to come out here and do another beach cleanup.”
