TAMARAC, Fla. — Dozens of volunteers sifted through clothes to send for donations, made greeting cards for the lonely and made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the food insecure.
They even collected blankets for pets.
It was all for “Mitzvah Day” at Temple Beth Sha’aray Tzedek, a synagogue in Tamarac.
Rabbi Rami Pavolotzky says that “mitzvah” is the Jewish commandment to give help: A blessing to those who give and to those who receive.
“Every day, as Jews, we are called to help, to be there for those who need it,” Pavolotzky said. “Here at the congregation, at least once a year, we all gather. We all come here and work for the community.”
Congregation member Helene Herman said, “We understand that people are in need everywhere and that is really important. Because when you help other people, you’re also helping yourself.”
