WESTON, Fla. — A pair of heroes who rushed to rescue a driver trapped by a fiery wreck last week also happened to be off-duty firefighters.
The two Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue lieutenants happened to be on Interstate 75 just moments after a car veered off the side of the road and hit a pole Sunday morning.
6 p.m. report:
They were headed to the fire station off Royal Palm Boulevard in Weston, and fortunately, Lieutenants Chris Florea and Steve Krivjanik were in the right place at the right time, and their work day started early.
“I definitely felt like we were angels that day,” said Krivjanik.
“I never really worked too much with Lt. Krivjanik, but somehow, our brains were thinking the same,” added Florea.
The first responders did not hesitate, as one grabbed a fire extinguisher he had in the truck and the other rushed to the driver’s side door to pull the man trapped inside to safety.
“Fortunate that we were able to get there because a few more minutes, I think the vehicle would’ve been fully involved,” said Krivjanik.
They were able to radio for help, and a helicopter was dispatched to the scene as fast as possible.
The victim was taken to the hospital as a trauma patient, where he remains in the ICU, though now in stable condition.
Both Florea and Krivjanik say they were just doing what they were trained to do, but on a Sunday morning, their heroic efforts likely saved a life.
“I was shaking right after,” said Florea. “Lt. Krivjanik and I were looking at each other like, ‘What the heck just happened?’”
The two said there was also a third good Samaritan: a random person who also stopped to help. They say this was a day at work they won’t forget.
