KEY LARGO, Fla. — A Broward County firefighter’s visit to the Florida Keys over the weekend came with a felony, sheriff’s deputies said.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Firefighter/Paramedic Michael Pollock is accused of stealing an American flag on Saturday.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Adam Linhardt said the theft happened on Seagate Boulevard in Key Largo.
“The victim stated Pollock (swam) across a canal and asked him to turn down his music. The victim complied,” Linhardt said in a news release. “Later that evening, Pollock swam back and stole the victim’s flag. Security video corroborated the victim’s statements.”
Video from the residence, obtained by Local 10 News, captured the bizarre incident.
An MCSO arrest report states that Pollock, 34, of Hollywood, “did not deny” swimming back to the property but said “had no recollection of doing so.”
The report states that he claimed he didn’t have the flag.
Deputies arrested Pollock on charges of burglary and petit theft.
MCSO jail records show he was being held on a $20,000 bond as of Sunday afternoon. As of Monday, it appears he had been released.
A BSFR spokesperson said Pollock, employed since 2016, is on administrative investigative leave with pay.
There was no answer at his listed address on Monday.
