MIAMI — There has been a major development into the heist of Miami Heat memorabilia valued at millions of dollars.
The suspect in the case, a 62-year-old former Miami police officer, entered a new plea that changed everything.
Wearing a blue suit, face mask and without saying a word, Marcos Perez walked out of the Miami federal courthouse after changing his plea to guilty.
Perez is accused of stealing millions in Miami Heat memorabilia when he worked security at the arena.
Federal authorities said the ex-cop had access to a storage area when he worked for the Heat and for the NBA.
Perez swiped more than 400 game-worn jerseys and other items, including a LeBron James NBA Finals jersey from that storage area, officials said.
Authorities said he later sold the stolen goods online to the tune of $2 million.
NBA insiders have been left stunned by the scope of the heist.
In a 10th-floor courtroom on Tuesday, Judge Jose Martinez asked Perez if the allegations were true, to which Perez calmly replied, “Yes, sir.”
He’ll be back in court for a sentencing hearing in October, where he faces a maximum prison term of ten years.
