According to an arrest report from the Miami Police Department, the shooting occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the stepbrothers’ home near North Miami Avenue and 31st Street in the city’s Wynwood neighborhood.

Police said the suspect, Landon Lumpkin, shot his 13 or 14-year-old stepbrother after the younger boy got home from school and saw that Landon was wearing his clothes.

The victim told police that he told Landon to take off his clothes, at which time Landon pointed a gun at him in an attempt to scare him.

According to the report, the gun, however, discharged, striking the victim in the left shoulder.

The victim’s mother heard the gunshot from inside her bedroom and ran to her children’s room where she found her injured son, the report stated.

Police said the mother immediately drove her son to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center where he was listed in stable condition.

According to the report, Landon was transported to MPD headquarters where he provided detectives with a statement in front of his mother. The statement was redacted from the publicly released report.

Landon was ultimately arrested on charges of aggravated battery with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a minor in connection with the case. A separate arrest report states that he also faces a charge of grand theft of a firearm as the .45 caliber Glock 21 used in the shooting had been reported stolen in Miami.

Miami Police Officer Mike Vega said the victim’s mother had no idea the eldest brother had a gun.

“Both parties say he didn’t intend to shoot his brother, but a gun does not go off by itself,” Vega said. “Someone has to press the trigger in order for the bullet to come out of that gun.”

Landon appeared in a juvenile courtroom Wednesday and his next court hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 9.
