Assisted living facility residents with boxing gloves show age is just a number

Boxing program helps seniors in Wilton Manors

WILTON MANORS, Fla. — Angel Baricelli said the residents of Williamsburg Landing -- some nearing 100 years old -- have shown him no one is ever too old to put on boxing gloves and get a workout.

Baricelli, the director of rehabilitation at the assisted living facility, said the Rock Steady boxing program has been popular. The seniors meet twice a week for the challenge.

Baricelli said the personalized program focuses on each of the residents’ physical abilities.

“We promote longevity,” Baricelli said. “That’s the main goal: Break people from that mindset of I’m too old for this, I’m too old for that.”

Some of the residents have also benefited emotionally from the program.

“When they put on their boxing gloves, they feel energized,” Baricelli said. “It brings memories. They punch their frustrations away.”
