BISCAYNE PARK, Fla. — Police arrested a Biscayne Park man on an animal cruelty charge on Wednesday after they said he “intentionally” poisoned his neighbor’s two cats, killing them.
Biscayne Park police said a neighbor witnessed Chaim Gubitz, 72, leaving “aluminum trays containing food and an unknown crystal substance” in an alley behind homes in the 900 block of Northeast 119th Street. Police initally responded on Saturday.
During a follow-up investigation on Wednesday, police said officers found “several containers and plates that were spread throughout” the alley, two of which “contained suspected animal poison and were photographed and collected for evidence.”
Later that day, the cats’ owner reported that her doorbell camera had just captured Gubitz placing two more food containers in the alley, police said.
She “rushed outside” and saw Gubitz walking away, an arrest report states, then followed him to his home three houses down and called the police.
Police said they spoke to Gubitz, who made a “spontaneous” statement after asking officers why they were there. That statement was redacted from the arrest report.
Authorities said Gubitz later invoked his Miranda rights before being arrested on a felony animal cruelty charge.
Records show the Brooklyn-born Gubitz submitted a $5,000 bond.
