FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Fort Lauderdale United FC kicked off its season Saturday with a six-goal thriller against Lexington SC.
In the first half, Fort Lauderdale United won a free kick in the attacking half.
Darya Marie Rajaee stepped up and found the back of the net with a shot into the top left corner, giving Fort Lauderdale the lead at halftime.
Once the second half began, the goals started pouring in.
Kiara Pralle scored for Fort Lauderdale in the 57th minute, doubling the lead to 2-0. Six minutes later, Lexington pulled one back, making it 2-1.
Just minutes after that, Lexington struck again, leveling the score at 2-2 within 12 minutes.
As the match began to wind down, Lexington stunned the crowd with a goal in the 87th minute off a corner kick, taking a 3-2 lead.
Fort Lauderdale had less than 10 minutes to respond — and did.
In extra time, Fort Lauderdale was awarded a penalty after drawing a foul in Lexington’s box. Jasmine Hamid stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, tying the game at 3-3.
After going up 2-0 early in the second half, Fort Lauderdale let the lead slip away and settled for a point. The club sits in fifth place after its opening match.
The next game is Saturday against Carolina Ascent FC.
