Smitty still dances and inspires at Davie fitness class

DAVIE, Fla. — At the Bamford Multipurpose Center, the motto is simple: movement for all ages and abilities. But it’s more than just a phrase — it’s a way of life for the lively group that gathers for fitness classes twice a week.

And no one embodies that spirit more than Harold “Smitty” Smith.

At 101 years old, Smith is a World War II veteran, a man of strong faith, and an enthusiastic dancer — even if he prefers to stay seated these days.

“Once you reach 100, you start life over again,” Smith said.“ I was not a drinker. I stayed away from cursing. I was in World War II. I’d like everyone to know the scriptures, know the Bible.”

He credits his long life to clean living, a positive attitude — and his love of music.

“My favorite dance was the samba,” he laughed. “But if I try it now, I’d probably fall down!”

Instead, Smith grooves from his chair — always in rhythm and rarely without his wife, Isa, by his side.

“We’ve been married for 48 years,” he said proudly. “I sing my wife love songs now.”

Together, they’re a highlight of the class — and a source of inspiration for everyone in the room.

“That’s our goal,” said instructor Rebecca Vetter. “To be half as great as Harold.”

Smith’s energy is infectious, and his presence is a reminder that it’s never too late to move, connect and celebrate life.

The class meets Tuesday and Friday mornings at the Bamford Multipurpose Center in Davie — and new members are always welcome.

Smith turns 102 on Oct. 2 — a golden birthday of sorts. He hopes others will join the class to help him celebrate another year of dancing, music, and joy.
