MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A student from Broward County faced charges on Monday in Miami-Dade County after a police pursuit that started with a stolen Cadillac Escalade in Coral Gables and ended in Coconut Grove, records show.
Miami-Dade court records show Larry Youte, who turned 18 years old earlier this month, faced four new charges: Three felonies and a misdemeanor. He also had five warrant cases, including two for hit-and-run crashes.
Miami-Dade inmate records show correctional deputies had been holding Youte at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center since early Saturday morning. The police pursuit was on Friday morning after officers responded to a residential burglary.
Youte, who was born in Plantation and lives in Margate, stole a gray 2024 Cadillac Escalade in the area of Marisual Street and Granada Boulevard, in Coral Gables, and struck several cars on U.S. 1, drove the wrong way, and turned on LeJeune Road, according to police.
Youte continued speeding and driving the wrong way again, police said. George Washington Carver Middle School, at 4901 Lincoln Drive, in Coral Gables, and Mater Grove Academy, at 2805 SW 32nd Ave., near Coconut Grove, were temporarily on lockdown.
In Coconut Grove, Youte turned southbound on Hibiscus Street, eastbound on Shipping Avenue, and crashed into a tree after trying to turn at New York Street, police said.
Youte then ran away and prompted a massive search in Coconut Grove. Police officers set up a perimeter from Carter to Elizabeth streets and from Shipping to Day avenues.
Police officers with the Miami and Miami-Dade Schools police departments, and deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office were also involved.
Youte hid in a backyard at 3450 Shipping Ave., and refused to answer detectives’ questions at the Coral Gables Police Department’s headquarters, according to police.
Prosecutors filed a case against him on Sunday. Youte faced charges of burglary of an occupied dwelling, grand theft of a vehicle, fleeing and eluding police, and resisting arrest. His bond was $11,000.
Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge David H. Young was set to preside over Youte’s case.
There were two other Coral Gables burglary suspects, including one who abandoned a white BMW, police said. A minor was arrested; the other was on the run.
Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477 to remain anonymous.
