Detective catches Miami-Dade felon beating woman with metal broomstick over $40, cops say

Mikol Vanright (MDCR)

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office detective caught a 56-year-old man with an extensive rap sheet beating a woman with a metal broomstick less than two blocks away from a police station on Monday, deputies say.

According to an arrest report, the detective was driving in the 900 block of Northwest 81st Street, near MDSO’s Northside District Station, just after 3 p.m. when he saw Mikol Vanright grab the broomstick and “hit the victim numerous time(s) in her head.”

The detective detained Vanright, deputies said. The victim told deputies that Vanright was “mad and accused her of stealing $40,” the report states.

According to the report, Vanright told deputies that “he was helping the victim by letting her shower at his house two months ago when she stole his ($40),” then made an admission, which was redacted from the report.

Deputies said the woman “sustained injuries to the back of her head and back area” but refused medical treatment.

They took Vanright into custody on an aggravated battery charge.

Florida Department of Corrections records show that Vanright has had six stints in state prison dating back to 1991, for convictions ranging from armed burglary, grand theft auto, cocaine possession and trafficking in stolen property in Hillsborough and Miami-Dade counties.

As of Tuesday morning, Vanright was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $3,500 bond.
