FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A longtime teacher with Broward County Public Schools appeared in court on Tuesday, facing six child sexual battery charges.
Jail records show that Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies based in Lauderdale Lakes arrested Basil Farrington, 47, on Monday.
While BCPS officials said Farrington has worked as a grant facilitator since 2020, they said he taught at Boyd H. Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes from 2000 to 2015 and at the Whiddon Rogers Education Center in Fort Lauderdale from 2015 to 2020. He mainly worked as a math instructor.
According to a brief arrest warrant, the accuser was a student at Boyd H. Anderson High School. Authorities allege that the assaults took place from 2011 to 2013 while Farrington was the boy’s teacher.
The warrant provided to Local 10 News provides no additional information, other than that the alleged victim was under 18 at the time.
In court, Farrington’s attorney pointed out that he had no prior criminal history and was expected to retire soon.
In court, the judge reviewed the document and said the charges stem from events that happened around 2011, but the statute of limitations does not apply.
“In this case, we’re dealing with the victim, (who) at the time was a minor,” prosecutor Eric Linder said. “There are psychological, emotional issues. There are other reasons that I’m not going to get into on the record, your honor, for why one may not come out with these types of allegations.”
Prosecutors requested that Farrington be held without bond, but the judge issued him a $150,000 bond.
If he posts bond, Farrington will have to wear an ankle monitor and be on total lockdown with no contact with minors or the accuser.
He also wouldn’t be allowed on school grounds.
A BCPS spokesperson said Farrington “will be reassigned by the District pending the outcome of the case.”
