SURFSIDE, Fla. — Newly obtained video shows the end of a police chase on a stretch of beach on the border between Bal Harbour and Surfside.
Police said the driver, Orlando Pablo Taboada, 53, of Hialeah, smiled and waved his passport and an American flag as he got Taser shocks from officers trying to remove him from his vehicle after he got stuck in the sand.
Bal Harbour police said the chase began just after 8 a.m. Friday after authorities in nearby Bay Harbor Islands warned them of a driver headed the wrong way on 96th Street towards Bal Harbour.
Authorities said Taboada entered Bal Harbour soon after, “at a high rate of speed, abruptly switching lanes and jumping curbs in a reckless and dangerous manner.”
He eventually crashed on the beach after hitting Bal Harbour and Surfside police cruisers, authorities said.
“They talk about our job, they say ’99% boredom and 1% sheer terror,’” Surfside police Chief Charles Press said. “And guess what? That 1% can happen any time.”
Press described the ordeal as “one of the most dangerous situations that I could imagine our officers and the public could have faced.”
Taboada is facing several felony charges.
