MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 62-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after Miami-Dade detectives said they uncovered a cockfighting operation at his home in the Redland area.

Jail records show Alfredo Miranda faces one count of illegally possessing an animal used for fighting, baiting or breeding, and one count of owning or managing property for animal fighting.

Deputies said they executed a search warrant at a property near the 19000 block of Southwest 202nd Street as part of an ongoing organized crime investigation.

Detectives reported hearing dozens of roosters crowing from inside the fenced property.

Inside, they found an enclosed cockfighting ring marked with numbers for spectators, cages holding game fowl with shaved feathers, and paraphernalia including vitamins, syringes, medication, rooster agitators and ledgers documenting fights, according to Miranda’s arrest report.

Deputies said a digital scale was also recovered.

Investigators said he was read his Miranda rights in Spanish and agreed to speak with detectives, though his statement was redacted from the publicly released report.

Records show Miranda was previously arrested on a charge of baiting an animal to use in a fight.

As of Thursday, Miranda was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was set at $5,000.
