MIAMI — The Urban Film Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary over Labor Day weekend, with more than 200 films scheduled for screening — many featuring writers, producers, directors, and actors from South Florida.
Founded to give a platform to underrepresented voices in film, the festival continues to serve as a vital resource for emerging artists.
“South Florida is just a rich place for film,” said Marco Mall, executive director and founder of the festival. “You have all these different cultures in Miami, and you’re able to come together and learn from each other. It’s a free festival because it’s for the people.”
Local 10 News spoke with Mall and Miami-based filmmaker Yonel Aris about the festival’s ongoing impact.
“You walk away from this meeting being inspired, being motivated to go out there and do something — and to make a difference,” Aris said.
Several more screenings are scheduled for Sunday night across multiple theaters.
Organizers say they are especially proud of the festival’s youth programs, including student scholarships and mentorship opportunities aimed at developing the next generation of filmmakers.
