Walk supporting rainbow crosswalks held in Miami Beach

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Over 100 people showed up for Miami Beach’s rainbow crosswalks that are currently in the political crosshairs across the state of Florida.

“Our rights are on shaky ground everywhere, but especially here in Florida,” said activist Paul Thomas.

Under Gov. Ron DeSantis, the Florida Department of Transportation has ordered communities across the state to remove colorful crosswalks and street art from public rights of way.

The move has ignited a firestorm of activism, like Sunday’s march in Miami Beach, across the state.

On Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, supporters marched through the streets, boldly holding signs stating that they will not be erased.

Cities have until Sept. 4 to part ways with the colorful displays to avoid losing state funding after DeSantis deemed them a distraction that is dangerous to public safety.

Thomas says people will push forward regardless of what happens to the street art.

“Whatever happens with the crosswalk, there is going to be an opportunity to make a bigger crosswalk,” he said. “The idea of stopping and disappearing that’s not going to happen.”
