MIAMI — A Miami police officer accused of firing her gun during a domestic violence incident with her boyfriend, who is also a Miami police officer, bonded out of jail late Monday night.

Officer Sthephany Canizares, 27, was booked into jail Sunday evening on charges of aggravated assault with a firearm and discharging a firearm in public or on residential property.

According to an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred shortly before 2:15 a.m. on Friday.

Deputies said Canizares and her boyfriend live together and have a child in common.

According to the report, Canizares initially claimed that she was being held against her will by her boyfriend and told responding deputies that he was inside their house.

Deputies then asked the boyfriend to come outside, at which time Canizares ran off, authorities said.

According to the report, the victim told deputies that he and Canizares had been having relationship issues for the past few days and he was awakened that morning by Canizares speaking to someone on her cellphone.

Deputies said the victim went outside to check on Canizares and told her come inside the house, but she refused and proceeded to walk toward the roadway.

According to the report, as the victim tried to convince Canizares to come inside, he saw that she was holding a gun and asked her to put the gun away.

Deputies said Canizares refused and as the victim went back inside, he heard what sounded like a gunshot.

According to the report, the victim then grabbed his own gun from its safe box, grabbed his daughter from her crib and then locked himself and his daughter in the bedroom.

Deputies said the victim repeatedly yelled at Canizares to calm down and put away the gun.

Finally, Canizares told her boyfriend that she had put away the weapon and had called police, the report stated.

But according to the report, Canizares didn’t call MDSO until about three hours later.

Deputies confirmed that Canizares was first transported to Jackson South Medical Center “for an evaluation due to her displaying abnormal behavior.”

According to the report, Canizares did make a statement to deputies, which was redacted from the publicly released report, but then invoked her right to counsel after being read her Miranda rights.

Following her arrest, a Miami-Dade County judge ruled that there wasn’t enough evidence to move forward with the aggravated assault charge, but the judge did find enough evidence to move forward with a misdemeanor charge for allegedly firing a gun outside.

For that, Canizares was given a $500 bond and was told she can still be around her boyfriend, identified as Officer Vigo, as long as there’s no more violence between them.

An MPD spokesperson said Canizares “has been relieved of duty with pay, pending the outcome of an active investigation.”
