MIRAMAR, Fla. — The city of Miramar is spotlighting entrepreneurs and creatives this week with a special edition of its First Fridays: Network & Chill series, featuring guest speaker Rohan Marley — founder of Marley Coffee and son of legendary musician Bob Marley.
The event is set for Friday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Tribeca Restaurant and Lounge in Miramar. Admission is free with RSVP.
Tara Rumph of the city’s Economic Development and Housing Department said the initiative began at the request of Mayor Wayne Messam as a way to inspire young entrepreneurs.
“He actually wants to inspire the younger generation, younger entrepreneurs, that either have a business or want to start a business,” Rumph said. “So what we did was we created First Fridays networking. Last month we hosted DJ Irie, and this month we’ll have legendary Rohan Marley to discuss how he has paved his own way and his brand.”
Marley said his entrepreneurial journey began after his football career at the University of Miami.
“I had to find something to do, and what I wanted to do was really give back to the community,” Marley said. “That’s why I became an entrepreneur. I started with Marley Coffee, and now I’ve also created a movement here in South Florida with Lion Order.”
At Friday’s event, Marley said he plans to share his philosophy as a “rasta-preneur.”
“I’m gonna speak about my journey and what it takes to become a businessman,” he said. “A rasta only means that I do business my way — which is a wholesome way, a godly way, a sustainable way.”
The evening is designed to mix networking with culture. Organizers say attendees can expect real talk, business connections, food, music and refreshments.
Marley said he also wants to inspire younger entrepreneurs in South Florida.
“The younger youths, they look up to ones like myself not only from the football standpoint but also as a Marley in business. We want to share that.”
The First Fridays: Network & Chill series is presented by the city of Miramar Economic Development and Housing Department and Mayor Wayne M. Messam.
Friday’s event with Rohan Marley will take place at Tribeca Restaurant and Lounge, 12100 Miramar Parkway #170.
