Up for debate: Book or movie first? National Read a Book Day sparks discussion

National Read a Book Day sparks debate: Book or movie first? Saturday marks National Read a Book Day, and it’s fueling a classic debate.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — Saturday marks National Read a Book Day, and it’s fueling a classic debate: Is it better to read the book before watching the movie adaptation, or to see the film first?

Supporters of reading the book first say it builds excitement and gives readers a chance to imagine the story in their own way. But that can also lead to disappointment if the movie doesn’t match their expectations.

On the other hand, some people discover books only after seeing the movie version, which can introduce them to new stories. Still, others say they feel less motivated to read once they’ve already watched the film.

The debate isn’t limited to fiction. Even nonfiction works — such as biographies or political books — have been turned into movies. Viewers often compare their own interpretations with what filmmakers create on screen.

From “Harry Potter” fans who complained that characters weren’t portrayed the way they imagined to readers who dive into books after watching an adaptation, the question remains open.

What do you think? Read the book or watch the movie first? Local 10 is inviting viewers to share their answers in the comment section below.
