DORAL, Fla. — Earlier this week President Trump announced that the 2026 G20 Summit would be held in Miami.
The G20 summit, short for group of 20, is a yearly meeting when 20 of the largest economies on earth get together. Collectively, they represent about 80% of the world’s population.
Some of countries involved include the United States, China, European Union, African Union, and several Latin American countries like Mexico, Argentina and Brazil.
Over the years, they’ve discussed topics like the global economy, health and trade.
Although Trump says the summit will be held at his hotel in Doral, he claims he won’t make any money off of it.
But there’s a lot of questions there.
The summit brings in tens of thousands of people, set to take place sometime in December, when tourism season is at its peak in South Florida, and it could overlap with Art Basel, that already brings in more than 80,000 visitors.
Plus, security requirements for the summit will be on a scale South Florida has never seen before.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez was in the Oval Office for the announcement, saying the event would be a major economic boost for the city, but would also put Miami front and center.
“It’s not only generationally important for the city, but it puts the city on the map is one of the truly great global cities,” said Suarez.
