MIAMI — Residents across South Florida were dealing with rainy weather and flooding on Monday.
The pumps placed by city crews were in overdrive mode to tackle the problem in Miami’s Edgewater area, as water, and plenty of it, was rising fast in a neighborhood on the edge of Biscayne Bay.
Andres Veléz ditched his shoes to wade through a flooded Northeast 23rd Street to get to his vehicle.
“My car just got flooded so not good news,” he said. “The electricity is power on, so I just disconnected the battery to make sure it’s not going to create a short circuit, but it seems like it may already be too late. As soon as you open the doors, the alarm starts going.”
A tow truck had to move Velez’s car out, and a mechanic will have to determine the water damage.
A little further south on Biscayne Boulevard, more surface flooding made driving a bit tricky near the Adrienne Arsht Center in Downtown Miami.
Heavy rain and poor drainage meant some pedestrians soaked through their shoes.
In Broward County, a bolt of lightning was captured on camera. The zap from Mother Nature took out a street light in Pembroke Park right outside of our Local 10 News studios.
The relentless rain also made a tough commute for drivers in the Flagami neighborhood of Miami, near Flagler Street and Northwest 63rd Avenue.
There, several streets were left with excess water.
